South Church Street Toll House, Near Josephine St.

Berryville, Clarke County, Virginia.

The area was first granted by the British Crown to Captain Isaac Pennington in 1734, establishing early colonial claims. George Washington surveyed parts of the land around 1750 for Lord Fairfax, marking significant exploratory activity.

Initially called Battletown, the settlement emerged mid-century at a key crossroads in the Shenandoah Valley, likely named for the free, frank, and kineticly punctuated exchange of ideas that were regularly conducted at a local tavern

Berryville was officially chartered and incorporated by the Virginia General Assembly on January 15, 1798, named after the primary landowners, the Berry Family.
